Acer will begin to sell its 7-inch tablet as well as the previously not mentioned 10-inch version in the fall, according to sources from the notebook industry. As expected, ARM hips will be used and Android will be the operating system. The company is now negotiating with cellular providers the marketing and eventual subsidies for the prices. Android 2.2 is the most probable version to be used together with support for Adobe Flash and other features for media playback. Acer is already selling e-book readers and is reportedly planning to cooperate with Far EasTone Telecommunications in order to sell them in Taiwan.

A prototype of the seven-inch tablet has already been shown before the Computex event and there was no doubt that at least this smaller model would be launched this year. Acer’s tablet is anticipated to be the first serious competition to Apple’s iPad, as it seems all devices not belonging to Samsung Galaxy Tab will either come from small companies or will not arrive this year.

Currently being the world’s second largest notebook producer after Hewlett Packard, Acer is more likely perhaps to have the power to compete with Apple’s iPad. Apple already has more than three million tablets available on the market today.
