Nokia has recently sold MetaCarta, after only three months since purchasing it; MetaCarta is a privately-owned geographic intelligence company. The new owner of MetaCarta is Qbase Holdings, which is another privately-held and US-owned corporation. Despite this, Nokia will keep MetaCarta’s geographic intelligence technology and implement it in its local search and portable devices.

Oil and gas customers are included into MetaCarta’s primary customer base; this employs more than 30 workers. The price Nokia paid for MetaCarta and what it sold it for to Qbase Holdings have not been made public.

After Nokia warned of a low second-quarter outlook, some rumored that this move may have been made in order to help the company meet its revenue targets. Nokia is expected to sell fewer phones and at a lower margin; the company could even use this sale to trim costs or other expenses. Otherwise, Nokia hasn’t given any explanation on this move until now.
