Remote controls for TVs which can detect the user and customize access to content according to necessities may be possible thanks to a project leaded by Magdiel Galan at the Arizona State University, together with several colleagues at Intel Labs. Researchers have used volunteers to determine how a certain individual holds the specially designed remote, with accelerometer readings taken every 100 nanoseconds. It also seems that one in five volunteers entered a PIN into the remote, in order to identify themselves.

It is estimated that the accuracy of the person-identifying system is between 60 and 90 percent, but also that this technology could be used to custom modify advertisements or block certain channels or content from children. There is no clue yet on when or if this new technology could see store shelves.
