Android may hit 100,000 applications in July

Android Market is expected to reach a milestone that is symbolic for Google, as the gap with Apple is closing. When the current rate is maintained, the Android store is supposed to reach 100,000 total applications before the end of this month, as it already has over 90,000 at present. While over 15,000 applications were added last month, the rate of growth is high enough to reach the goal.

The above mentioned figures are not official as they are not confirmed by Google. Calculations of application counts have generally accompanied other launches and have been conservative.

Increases have often been associated with releases of new Android handsets and the first major one began in November last year around the Droid’s launch. Most recent increases of the rate were observed in April and May when the Droid Incredible has been unveiled. Google’s decision to give free Evo 4G handsets to every developer on the occasion of the Google I/O conference this year in May has been well received, although it touched only a few thousand of the developers, already committed to Android.

If this expansion proves to be accurate, will bring Android market closer to iPhone’s App Store with respect to quantity, as Apple’s most recent official count shows 225,000 applications, but the growth rate is significantly slower at this time. Android Market had 50,000 applications in April but enjoys an influx of interest never existing before. There are concerns about Android focusing too much on free applications instead of professional or paid level applications. However, this rush suggests a high interest in development which includes developers who otherwise would have embraced only iOS. Important companies such as Amazon and Sling Media have recently begun to port applications previously available only on other platforms.
