According to comScore, both Apple and Research in Motion lost share on smartphone market in favor to the Android platform of Google this spring. Starting with February and ending in May, the iPhone has lost one point to hit exactly 24.4 percent of share on the United States market. Meantime, the BlackBerry lost 0.4 points and reached 41.7 percent. Android’s share marked a relative jump of 44 percent during the same three months and went from nine to thirteen percent.

The decline continued for Microsoft and Palm. Windows Mobile reached 13.2 percent of phones in the US, while webOS dropped to 4.8 percent. When it comes to overall business, as a premiere, Research in Motion overtook Nokia by leaping from 8.2 to 8.7 percent, while Nokia showed the reverse, going down to 8.1 percent. As for the top three, they held their spots. Samsung, at 22.4 percent, is still leading, while LG has 21.5 percent and the third place is for Motorola which has 21.2 percent.

The analysts have not explained these results, but the Droid Incredible’s launch on Verizon has supported Android’s major lift in the United States. Although its continuous sellouts result from display shortages, Android has been given a boost by sustained demands and the original Droid’s strong sales, as well as some minor additions like in the case of Motorola Backflip. However, analysts appreciate that this would not cover the iPhone 4 launch, as Apple has sold 1.7 million phones in only three days.

The Evo 4G was also omitted from this most recent study. It has been launched in early June. Also omitted were the Galaxy S and Droid X, both of them going on sale within a week.

I think Android is going to be hard to compete with. Especially with phones like the Droid X coming out. Also Apple has now taken a huge shot in the PR department with the endless problems of the iphone 4, which will only help Android phones..
