The HDBaseT Alliance which is six-month old has finalized the technical specifications of its standard for A/V cable called HDBaseT. It is meant to replace the existing HDMI standard and would convey signals over standard network cables Cat 5e/6, long up to 328 feet. This format also allows mixing of data and video, being able to take 3D and high definition video signals as an addition to a normal 100Mbps network.
Networking capabilities added will allow HTPCs and DVRs to output video signal to any TV set in the house. Several devices can be connected in a daisy-chain or star configuration. Power can also be transmitted through the network so that it can be provided to TVs that require only one input cable.
The first hardware products supporting the standard are scheduled to reach stores sometime later this year, although the alliance expects important adoption rates only in 2011. HDBaseT is constituted of LG, Samsung, Valens Semiconductor and Sony Pictures Entertainment.
