Anssi Vanjoki, the new head of Nokia’s Mobile Solutions, is committed to renew efforts to improve the standing of the company in smartphones. He admitted that Nokia had lost the technical lead but also that he was preoccupied to bring the company to the top place again. He mentioned some directions like higher quality, to avoid poor launch firmware like the N97, and also bringing phones faster on the market, as Nokia’s usual tendency was to leave a number of months between introduction and shipping.
Referring to the upcoming N8, he said that the phone would not benefit from an accelerated launch, but would certainly surprise the public with its performance, mainly with the 12-megapixel camera. Competition with the iPhone and Android phones is sharp, although Nokia still detains the larger share of the market of all three. Nokia has also lost two of its most faithful supporters, as two key members of the Symbian Guru site have given up, one of them even leaping to Android. Vanjoki said that, as a challenger, Nokia has a fight on its hands.
Nokia’s executive also addressed the way the company would come back. It will be still committed to use Symbian and MeeGo as well and would not use Android. The Nseries smartphones will not switch to MeeGo only and the N8 will be the only Nseries phone to use Symbian^3. as Vanjoki said, a new Nseries phone supporting the dramatically revised Symbian^4 would be a strong possibility.
MeeGo is still meant to reach pocketable devices. It was however treated more like a computing platform than as a strict smartphone operating system.
A more detailed turnaround would be important for the company in the upcoming months, as it has lost large shares of the market in Europe in favor of iPhone, Android and BlackBerry phones, and is not supposed to get better on short term. In the meantime, Apple has reached record sales and Nokia could only see a significant worldwide loss when this month’s reports will be available.
