New stories from within Palm have showed that the company is dismissing employees through low-key means, as a consequence of the acquisition by HP. One of the recently laid off staffer has declared that Palm has given “welcome to HP” letters to employees it will keep. Palm said that it will make a decision concerning the other staffers by June 21, but has only given notice in the start of July. Recently, rumors claimed that there were free positions; a Barron’s source even mentioned 33 available in June and a total of 100 more over the next year. HP and its new Palm division have not commented yet on the layoffs.
It seems that headcount cutbacks are not unusual with acquisitions; companies usually want to get rid of the overhead. Despite this, HP hadn’t mentioned anything about any job cuts. Since the deal was announced for the first time, most of the departures have involved high-level engineers, as well as executives quitting voluntarily (for example, Matias Duarte and Rich Dellinger). Jon Rubinstein, Palm’s CEO, is currently still onboard and will most likely take charge of the company as division of HP.
