A recent unnoticed rumor has raised some doubts in the iPhone 4’s antenna problem – the reception issues could have been caused by production problems. This, along other report, are claiming that Apple’s support representatives were told that there was a problem with a coating; this was meant to prevent accidentally bridging the handset’s antenna, but it seems that it wasn’t present on all iPhone 4s. Even if Apple couldn’t offer a repair in either case, one caller was told that the existing devices could be repaired or even replaced once Apple issues an official solution to the problem. If the material is the only problem, later production should theoretically not be affected.
The rumor is still unconfirmed; it was first surfaced several days before the manufacturer’s official response. The latter hadn’t made any mention of hardware and claimed that the handset was misreporting the actual signal, not losing performance. Therefore, details may be inaccurate.
Doubt still exists and rumors could explain the inconsistent behavior of the anomaly. Several iPhone 4 users have had very little or no issues, regardless of the place where they use the smartphone; others have had big signal problems, even in known good areas. Losses may be dictated by grip, even if they haven’t been objectively verified yet. Moreover, Consumer Reports has recently declared that it can’t reproduce any of the conditions.
