Cisco has recently unveiled its plans to release a new Flip camera to benefit from Wi-Fi support, while also expanding the array of products designed for the Apple mobile devices. Until now, the company hasn’t yet given any specific details on the Wi-Fi Flip, but the device is expected to start shipping on the market before the end of this year.
Marthin De Beer, Cisco senior VP of emerging technologies, declared for a Computerworld interview that they didn’t buy Flip to have it be only a video recorder. He also suggested that the company is currently working on an iPhone 4 video client, which will soon be submitted to the App Store. This iOS application will be Mobi-based; it also seems that Cisco would like to integrate with FaceTime.
Concerning Apple’s lack of Flash support for its mobile devices, Cisco could possibly have a solution to that, by producing a video transcoding system. The new Media Experience Engine will be available inside carrier or enterprise networks and will automatically convert Flash video to iPhone and iPad supported formats.
Full details for the new projects haven’t yet been announced by Cisco, including pricing and release dates.
