Apple’s iPhone 4 – 1.7 million devices sold on launch, record crushed

Apple claims to have broken any previous record by having sold 1.7 million iPhone 4s on the device’s launch. This was the most successful launch ever for Apple and it had to scale back the rollout to five other countries. Steve Jobs, the company’s chief, had to acknowledge that there were shortages even in this first wave. He apologized to customers who have been turned away due to insufficient supply.

The introduction is 70 percent larger than the similar event for the 3GS model of the iPhone. The latter has seen one million units sold during its launch weekend, but has reached some countries that would not get the iPhone 4 until July. Such countries are Australia, Canada, New Zealand and many European countries too.

This launch represents the largest event of the kind ever and for any cellphone. Android has had accelerated overall sales but never enjoyed a launch of the importance of the iPhone release. Nokia has had larger savings for its phones, but never highly anticipated and coordinated launches. The Motorola Droid, probably the most successful Android device to date, has not reached more than 525,000 units sold during two months after its release in November.
