According to an unofficial report from AndroidandMe, the Droid 2 should be launched on August 23 (instead of the rumored July 19), at Verizon. The delay could be due to the fact that the Droid 2 will be the first smartphone to ship with a preloaded version of Android 2.2; thanks to a hands-on review, the hardware seems to be already finalized. Early handsets were Android 2.1-powered; despite this, Motorola is rumored to be working on finalizing Android 2.2.
Otherwise, Android 2.2 will most probably be released for the current Droid in the end of July; the recently announced Droid X is expected to get it around August. The Droid X and Droid 2 seem to have similar hardware specifications: a 1GHz processor, as well as other associated internal parts. The Droid 2, though, will benefit from a smaller 3.7-inch display, but also from a five-megapixel camera.
If bought with a two-year contract, the Droid 2 could be priced at $200.
