On June 28, 2010, Google announced that its Google Docs viewer has currently gone mobile, being available for Android-based devices, but also for the iPhone and the iPad. Users no have the possibility to view PDF, PPT, DOC and DOCX files, which have been uploaded to their documents list, with no need of downloading them before. The functionality also offers the possibility of switching pages and panning or zooming on a page; pinch-to-zoom is supported on Apple’s devices.
The service has already gone live; users of Android-powered devices and Apple devices are encouraged to try it out. In order to view files uploaded in the formats, users only have to login into a dedicated Google account.
In recent weeks, Google has been adjusting a great part of its web platform for iOS devices. This doesn’t include only the document viewer, but also the iPad-friendly Gmail or making iPads use the desktop variants of sites instead of normally using their iPhone versions.
