About 70 million BlackBerries to be shipped by RIM in twelve months

Expectations for Research in Motion are to a large increase of the number of phones shipped this year, according to insiders from the industry. A number of 60 million up to 70 million BlackBerry phones are supposed to ship during the next twelve months, as Taiwanese part suppliers estimate. A lot of this boost will probably be attributed to the BlackBerry OS 6, which will renew the interest in BlackBerry handsets accordingly.

DigiTimes sources showed that this rise would be possible for RIM without having to outrun Android or iPhone 4 in order to sell more handsets. While targeting mainly a business audience, a large part of these sales could simply originate in switching over of Windows Mobile users.

A significant increase of the sales is however needed, as the all-time record of 11.2 million devices sold this spring by RIM is certainly not enough to reach its target’s low end if sustained for the rest of the year. As Research in Motion does not expect more than 12 million devices shipped during this summer, it would need a 16 million average each quarter to reach the target.
