On June 25, 2010, the Blu-ray Disc Association finalized the proposed BDXL format for Blu-ray discs. This will offer up to 128GB of storage space on both rewritable and write-once discs. BDXL will mainly target video producers and people who need to write a large amount of data to a removable backup; this will be possible with triple-layer 100GB rewritable discs (RE) and write-once discs (R), but also with quadruple-layer 128GB R discs.

In order to read BDXL discs, new disc readers have to be especially designed to read this type of discs, even if these will also be compatible with the current 25GB and 50GB Blu-ray disc formats. License information, as well as applications for this new standard are already available for manufacturers. The Association hasn’t yet given any details on the estimated release date of the first BDXL hardware.
