With the occasion of the Droid X launch, Andy Rubin from Google said that more than 160,000 Android handsets are sold daily. This represents a huge jump compared to the 100,000 pieces sold each day a month earlier. It would also mean that 4.8 million Android devices are going online every month. Other hardware builders such as Motorola and HTC were selling only 60,000 phones per day in February.

Google has declared to open-source Android 2.2 in order to let developers use and modify freely the mobile operating system.

The explosion of the sales can be mainly credited to Android’s success in the United States. In this area, the original Droid still faces shortages, as well as the Evo 4G and the Droid Incredible, although they are rather part-related than sheer sales.

It is not certain if Google’s partners could sustain such a high level of production and successfully challenge larger competitors like Apple and Research in Motion. Apple had 600,000 pre-orders for the iPhone 4 registered just for the launch day. This does not include walk-in sales as well as third-party retailers. Shipping is also available only for several countries this month. Shipment for the iPhone 4 should expand next month and also through the other months of this year.

Research in Motion has also estimated shipment of over eleven million BlackBerry phones in the ongoing quarter.
