Motorola has revealed the Droid X, the new Android flagship device, which is its best chance of fighting against the iPhone 4. The device has a larger 4.3-inch touchscreen, with an 854×480 resolution and a fast enough 1GHz processor which can support the eight-megapixel camera providing 720-pixel video recording. An HDMI output is also supported. It will sport its own Wi-Fi hotspot characteristic, like the Evo 4G, which allows sharing the 3G connection between itself and other five devices.
The Droid X would have three microphones, as a result of the competition with Apple. One of them helps canceling noise. The phone has only 8GB of internal storage, but a 16GB card will be provided instead of the anticipated 8GB one. The battery will have a longer lifespan compared to the Evo 4G, although the screen area is the same. The capacity of the battery is 1,500mAh.
As for the software, the new smartphone has a special tie-in with Blockbuster for movie rentals or purchases directly from the handset. Sports video will be accessed through Android-based NFL Mobile, while DLNA sharing will allow access to content on the local network. Skype is also provided, while Swype will be used to help speeding up typing when using the on-screen keyboard. Android 2.1 provides support for professional users with Gmail Enterprise and Exchange. The phone will not, however, ship with Flash 10.1. Android 2.2 is not expected before the end of this summer.
Motorola will bring the new phone to Verizon on the 15th of July, at a price of $199, considering a mail-in rebate of $100. The hotspot feature will not be free, as it will be charged $20 for a data transfer of 2GB, which will be added to the $70 representing the minimum smartphone plan.
Motorola’s new Droid is timed effectively to counterbalance Apple’s new devices, but does not offer exactly the same features. For example, a front-facing camera is missing and the phone will technically use a screen with a lower resolution, in spite of a larger surface that creates more available area for the user interface. Other features like battery life and built-in storage are also in favour of Apple’s device.
