Toshiba has continued to launch its notebooks by rolling out the so-called “lightest full notebook”. The new Portege R700 is thick under 0.7 inches and is weighing just three pounds. However, it has full features notebook processors which are up to and include Intel’s dual Core i7. Although having an unusual weight for a notebook, the Portege R700 has a battery lasting for 8.5 hours maximum or 12.5 hours in the case of the nine-cell extended pack.
Much of this reduction of its weight is determined by a honeycomb shell which can keep the body strong without the help of any extra material. Cooling is co-developed by Intel, which probably means Laminar Jet, and is aimed to reduce the cooling needed by the high-power mobile chipset.
Toshiba will make available a mainstream model soon. It will be found at Best Buy in exclusivity and will cost $889. The first model, the R705, will have a Core i3 processor and 4GB of RAM, as well as a hard drive with a capacity of 500GB and support for Wireless Display.
The R700 models are pro-oriented and more widely available. They start at $999 with a similar configuration, while the $1,299 model will have a 2.4GHz Intel Core i5 processor and a hard drive with 320GB capacity at 7,200RPM. A range leader model costs $1,599 and has a 2.66GHz Intel Core i7 processor and a solid-state drive with a 128GB capacity.
The Portege R700 is already available online, while the R705 is expected to ship slightly later, which means it will reach Best Buy on the 27th of June. There will also be an optional dock available sporting USB 3.0 ports as well as additional expansion. Its price has not been defined yet.
