AT&T’s unlimited 3G may return, though disappeared

On June 21, AT&T has turned off the unlimited data option on 3G iPads, about two weeks later than the carrier promised, but wanted to assure nervous owners that the service will soon be back. AT&T has admitted that the option is not available anymore, but said that this will be back in all the iPads which were before June 7. The carrier also added that more details are to come later on.

The plan is part of AT&T’s newly imposed 3G data limits; for example, on the iPad, data would be restricted to 2GB before starting to incur extra fees. There have been rumors saying that earlier customers may not benefit anymore from the service, if they have already interrupted data access payment. AT&T’s new rules could allow all of these customers to resume the unlimited data option whenever they want to.

What is your source? You are the only one reporting this. I had a very long conversation with AT&T yesterday. I purchased an iPad-3G on May 7th, and activated the 250MB plan, but never signed up for the unlimited plan. It was advertised by AT&T that a user could switch between the two plans, depending on their needs. The unlimited plan is no longer available, never to return. So for those who purchased a 3G iPad, you will be restricted to the 2GB plan max, unless you already activated the unlimited plan. If you switch to anything less than unlimited, you will never get it back.

I filed an online complaint with the FCC and my state Atty. General under the allegation that this was false advertising and that they failed to notify customers before making this change arbitrarily, and did not give customers the chance to sign up for the unlimited plan. I encourage ALL 3G users to do the same.

Also, this is an opportunity for other carriers to enter the data market. The iPad is unlocked, but runs on a specific 3G frequency that T-Mobile doesn’t haven’t in their spectrum. But there is opportunity for myfi-type services, and for non-3G data through a micro-sim card.
