Terry Myerson, head of the development team of Windows Phone 7 said that the mobile operating system would be a total remake. He labeled it as being a first release and also confirmed that the graphics and interface of the OS had been removed and started new in early 2009. Following a top down decision, certain features have been cut, such as multitasking and copy-and-paste, with the only goal of delivering the operating system in time and at the desired level of quality.
As not all the features are present or at the performance level intended by Microsoft, Myerson says that all these have to be implemented or improved ant this is the reason for assimilating this version to a first release or the 1.0 version.
The operating system is almost ready and everything it needs is some fixes and additional driver support too. Myers mentioned that copy-and-paste not only is absent in this release but it even is not a priority, as there is a large number of other features that should be restored or even added. He said that other features are more frequently used and therefore need the special attention of the development team.
The time estimated by the development lead to bring the Windows Phone 7 to an ideal status is about five years from its start. Of course there is a certain degree of incertitude related to Myerson’s statement. What is sure is that the operating system will reach phones a number of months after Apple’s release of the iOS, which is adding some of the features just taken out by Microsoft which initially focused on reaching a level of integration comparable to Apple, but at the same time continuing to support multiple hardware makers. As Terry Myerson said, Microsoft aspired to the same level of performance for the end-user, but such a level would require a similar level of partnership.
