AT&T is supposed to block Sirius XM applications on its Android devices, according to some sources. The new Motorola Backflip and HTC Aria already prohibit downloading of Sirius XM related files. They are known to have a ban imposed by the career with respect to downloading any applications which are not inside the Android Market, although the operating system normally does not enforce such restrictions.
However, Nexus One phones using AT&T native service are not subject to these limits because they use the reference version of Google’s Android.
The limitations have been discovered for the first time in March but AT&T has never provided an explanation for its policy. It is the only North American carrier to forbid the installation of non-Market applications. This behavior partially explains why AT&T has only a small share of Android phones in the United States compared to Verizon, for example. The latter has a more flexible policy and no such limits in place.
Decisions like this are what drives customers away. AT&T already know they have a limited network, so they have to discourage people from trying to use so much of it.
I have a Backflip, and find the headline a bit misleading. With a little bit of work, you can indeed install the Sirius app via USB sync and it will run just fine. I’ve used the Sirius app quite a bit on my Backflip, and the AT&T app police have yet to knock on my door.
So it isn’t really a situation where AT&T is blocking Sirius because it is Sirius, but rather the Sirius app can’t easily be installed because it is not in the Marketplace.
