Sony Ericsson has recently released its fourth Android-powered smartphone in less than a year: Xperia X8. The handset, which is known by its Shakira codename, is a mid-range device, which offers various features. It benefits from a three-inch, 480×320 display (which is smaller than the flagship Xperia X10, but larger than that of the X10 mini series), from an average 600MHz processor and from X10 minis’ corner UI, which gives the possibility of a better usage of the available storage space. The Xperia X8 also gets a 3.2-megapixel camera, GPS and Wi-Fi, a microSDHC card slot and a 2GB card for more storage. However, the software is limited to Android 1.6. The handset offers full HSPA 3G support, also handling the 850MHz and 1,900 MHz North American 3G bands, which makes launches possible to AT&T and Canadian carriers.

Sony Ericsson hasn’t yet mentioned anything about carriers, but confirmed the release of the Xperia X8 for some areas, somewhere during this summer. Moreover, the company hasn’t promised any OS upgrades for the X8, but it promised more Android 2.1 updates, also saying that the X10, X10 mini and X10 mini pro will most certainly get the newer Google operating system during summer. Most of the fixes will offer benefits for full-size X10 owners: thanks to the 2.1 revamp, the device will soon get HD video recording. Moreover, the X10 will get a dedicated update for wireless media sharing with TVs and also new versions of MediaScape and TimeSpace UI layers somewhere during fall. Unfortunately, because of the hardware limits, multi-touch will most likely not reach the X10.

The marketing on these phones has really been turned up since the iPhone 4 was introduced by apple. I’ve notice that website are starting to give the Android Phones aways. A website “simpsonville.net” is offering androids phones for free and code for a free 2GB Memory Card when purchased through their website. I assume the carrier “Verizon” is hoping to make these discounts back in the monthly fees they charge. I’ve got another year on my Blackberry contract before I can make the change.
