Important electronic producers have formed a coalition with the declared goal of boosting the creation of devices based on Linux. ARM, Freescale, Texas Instruments, IBM, ST-Ericsson and Samsung are all partners of Linaro in this project and will provide software and tools meant to encourage the creation of open-source tablets and other devices in an easier way and faster.
The contribution of the above mentioned companies would not be limited to Linux, but would also include other operating systems like Android, webOS or MeeGo.
The efforts of the coalition are intended to avoid eventual fragmentation in Linux, as companies are frequently addressing a small market or work on a small amount of hardware. Designers involved in the Linaro project are also committed to improve besides the battery life and hardware aspects, speed and other characteristics of the software as well.
The first software provided by Linaro is scheduled to be ready in November and will concentrate on improving devices that run ARM Cortex.
