Skype 2.0 for iPhone to permit 3G calling

Skype has rolled out the long expected version 2.0 for iPhone, available in the App Store for free. This update is the first to support 3G calling for the iPhone and treats calls from Skype to Skype as they were on Wi-Fi. Pure VoIP calls will be free until the end of 2010 and will need a small monthly fee to be paid afterwards.

Calls towards traditional phone numbers are always paid and use SkypeOut minutes no matter what connection is in use. CD quality audio is brought by the Skype’s update, thanks to a more advanced audio codec running on the faster Apple hardware, which starts from the second-generation of iPod touch, and includes the third-generation version, the iPhone 3GS and the iPad as well.

The recent iPhone implementation is among the few which allow VoIP calls over 3G. Verizon’s subscribers can access a special version of Skype addressed to BlackBerry and Android, but they need to spend voice minutes every time they are away from Wi-Fi. This eliminates one of the main advantages that a VoIP application provides.
