AT&T is mobilizing for the new iPhone and intends to offer an insurance plan, long-anticipated, for the iPhone. The plan, called MobileProtect, would cover the cost of an accidentally broken iPhone for a $14 monthly fee. Users are expected to subscribe through the App Store, but there is no information whether or not the application itself would cost anything.
The plan would be technically covered by Asurion, a third-party firm, and is supposed to hand over the entire risk to that company, instead of AT&T. Previously, the customers had to take the risk and pay the full price for the phone. The cost of the iPhone 3GS could be $699 for a 32GB device.
MobileProtect would launch on the 6th of June, and is perfectly timed, as it comes just a day before the introduction of Apple’s new iPhone at WWDC. Some potential iPhone buyers have considered insurance as been a sticking point. Virtually, every other handset sold at AT&T stores has an optional insurance.
