Walmart has announced it would cut the price of the 16GB iPhone 3GS to $97. The new price is less than half the price of $197 retailers ask now, two weeks before WWDC, when the unveiling of the next-generation iPhone is expected. Mehrdad Akbar, who is a senior wireless director at Walmart, has not been more specific on the reasons for slashing the price of Apple’s phone he only reiterated that its company had always to lead on price.
The official cut of prices comes after rumors that Apple was ceasing to ship the iPhone 3G to AT&T. Analysts and observers expect Apple’s 16GB iPhone 3GS to become the new base model of the company, even if the next-generation model is supposed to have the same 16GB of memory. This would make Apple to have, for the first time, similar capacities for two different phones, the $99 and $199 models. However, different features exist, like screen and camera.
Apple did not mention a price cut for its iPhone 3G, but an official announcement is expected.
