Sony has unveiled its first mirrorless Alpha camera. A specification sheet and a pair of images recently revealed have confirmed the existence of the NEX3 and NEX5. Both devices feature 14.2-megapixel, APS-C sized CMOS sensors and function as balances between full SLRs and compact cameras. They rely on a simplified and articulated touchscreen as a primary interface. They still have full manual control over the shot that includes RAW.

Both cameras perform above compact in most respects. They have light sensitivity up to ISO 12,800 with low noise and they can shoot quickly, at up to seven frames per second. The two cameras can capture video, the NEX3 topping out at 720-pixel, while the NEX5 is able to record in 1,080i.

Sony has an unusual approach with respect to the flash, as it does not build the flash into the camera’s body, but bundles a standard external flash. The cameras can use adapters to replace the flash with an electronic viewfinder or with a stereo microphone for improved sound when recording video. Native resolution preview is supplied by an HDMI output.

Pricing is available in euros only and will start relatively low for this category. The NEX3 will cost 500 euros ($643 equivalent) and will have a 16mm f2.8 pancake lens. The NEX5 will start at a minimum price of 600 euros ($772 equivalent). Kits will be available with an 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 zoom lens, an 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 ultrazoom, and two-lens 16mm and 18-55mm bundles for the two models. Both cameras will be available in June and will probably get American pricing soon.
