Sony at its 10 millionth e-book, perhaps eclipsed by Apple

Sony claimed to have recorded 10 million e-books downloaded through the Reader Store. The event has happened on May 5th and comes 3.5 years after the opening in September 2006. With this occasion, Sony is rewarding any person who bought a book through its store on this milestone day. Credits valuing $10 are offered to the lucky customers to mark this occasion.

Although the 10 million books are very important for Sony, they don not mean too much for the new competitor Apple. The latter has managed to sell 1.5 million books that have been downloaded in over a month from the date they became available, despite being limited to a single device and a single country, the iPad and the United States, respectively. If current rates are maintained, apple will equal Sony’s sales in just seven months, i.e. by the start of next year.

Once the iPad is launched worldwide later this month, the rates are supposed to grow, as supplementary iBooks are scheduled to reach iPhones as well as iPod touch players not later than this summer.

Although being a pioneer in e-books and he maker of the first popular e-readers, which was certainly an advantage, Sony has proven to be a little slow to adapt to new trends. Thus, it began offering the 3D-capable e-reader only two years after Amazon and still does not have Wi-Fi or other features that have been added meantime.
