The iPad’s Camera Connection Kit supports USB audio and keyboards

Tests performed by TidBITS have revealed interesting details about the iPad’s Camera Connection Kit that can be used for USB devices other than cameras. The kit works with most any headset, headphone or microphone USB-based that makes possible either listening to music or take VoIP calls using normally computer-oriented add-ons. The call quality is exceptional and allows considerable easier use of Skype for those people who do not prefer to use Bluetooth headsets.

The above mentioned functionality is also extended to keyboards, as recent tests have shown, although this behaviour was expected thanks to the functionality of the iPad Keyboard Dock. As there is no stand when the adapter is used, the convenience of the USB keyboard is reduced.

The adapter works as it was expected and conforms to its designed role, being able to add images to the Photos application when it is plugged-in. The iPad supports RAW from high-end cameras and can also import captured photos at full resolution that include the EXIF metadata from the original shot. Video is also supported and the iPad lets photographers trim videos like it is possible with the iPhone 3GS’ editor. Clips can be cut short and any video larger than 640×480 and 5MB is shrunk in length and resolution to fit the length. Why this happens is not certain but it could be reminiscence from the iPhone.

Thank you for your excellent tutorial on the SDHC card connector for the iPad. It seems a better way of transferring photos than using iPhoto and syncing through iTunes. Can I also transfer my SDHC H.264 video in this way?
