The iPone HD has reportedly been seen in San Jose by pure chance. It seems that it was lost by its owner and was found hidden in an iPhone 3G case. The device is a radical redesign including the front video camera which is the reason for its taller build. The phone would have a maximum storage of 80GB instead of the more likely 64GB rumoured. It would also run a newer version of iPhone OS, probably 4.0.
This phone would be the first remake of the iPhone 3G, would have aluminium sides and buttons for volume instead of the rocker switch. The device seems to have a flatter back made of plastic to provide the necessary cellular reception. Appearing to be a prototype, the device uses “X” as a placeholder for the identifiers and capacity, such as the FCC ID.
Accepting the device really exists, there is a possibility that the phone spotted in San Jose is not the final design of the future smartphone and some changes may appear in the final version. Apple has to start mass production for the new iPhone in spring in order to have an early summer launch. This way, the device seen in San Jose may belong to a small batch produced for testing purposes.
A Twitter post contains a set of photos representing the same device and has a Chinese author. The pictures are more consistent and show more details representing the inside of the phone as well as the front camera.
Another source pretends the photos show a Japanese imitation phone, although the information on the back of the device is, in this case, inadequate.
The images may not be a fake, as another post notes that a rather similar device may actually have been seen in one of the same photos sitting by an iPad just a day before the tablet was made public. An Engadget tipster has also confirmed that the phone spotted earlier is the next model of iPhone. It would have a higher-resolution screen, a front camera, a sharper back camera with flash, and the same type of micro SIM card slot as the 3G-capable iPad. New photos posted on a forum and representing the phone’s interior appear to be consistent.
