Palm CEO would have preferred a shorter deal with Sprint

Jon Rubinstein, current Palm CEO and Apple veteran, has declared he would have wanted a deal with Sprint, but a shorter one, in an interview with Fortune. This is a change versus the initial strategy. Sprint has established an exclusive agreement regarding the distribution of the Pre phone. Rubinstein said that Sprint would want an aggressive launch on webOS and would invest significant amounts of money. He admitted that a launch in October with Verizon and a shorter exclusivity with Sprint would have changed many things.

Palm’s CEO played down rumours that the company was reaching out for a future takeover bid, although funds are fewer to plan future projects. He thinks Palm will continue to spend on brand advertising, for example, even with a smaller budget.

Rubinstein said that the economy of the business affects the scaling projects. According to him, Apple had a similar situation many years ago but, once that moment passed, Apple became a real cash machine.
