Wi-LAN has continued its practices of suing a large number of companies of the technology industry instead of using business as an argument. The suit includes major electronics manufacturers like Apple, Acer, Dell, Sony, LG, Toshiba and other 12 companies that would violate a patent related to Bluetooth use. The Canadian-based Wi-LAN accuses the above mentioned companies of copying the technology used in their computers, network devices and cell phones.
Wi-LAN will be represented by the law firm McKool Smith, well known for winning lawsuits filed by i4i and VirnetX against Microsoft. Its suit was also filed in the Marshall Division of the Eastern District of Texas, considered notorious for being on the same side with complainants in patent disputes.
Wi-LAN is known as focused on wireless technology implementation but also for giving it up when normal business failed. Since then, it has concentrated and based business on patent lawsuits. Wi-LAN is trying to get royalties and settlements rather than offering a product of its own. It has targeted its lawsuits against many of these companies in 2008 over various patents and has mainly targeted large firms.
