Peter Chou, chief of HTC, has recognized for the media that most of its smartphone success comes from the United States. No percentage has been provided but he said that shipment in the US has grown faster than others. Six million HTC phones have been shipped to the United States in 2009, many of them being phones like the myTouch 3G, aka HTC Magic, in T-Mobile’s network and the Droid Eris for Verizon.

Much of this growth is due to Verizon as it has treated HTC as a very important company, according to Peter Chou. This statement is related to the previous Verizon’s policy of rarely promoting HTC’s phones intensively, even the best ones. Verizon has often removed HTC’s name from devices like the VX6800, as it considered HTC’s name as insignificant for many years.

The Taiwanese company seems to have aggressive plans for its expansion. It has provided flagship phones like the Evo 4G for Sprint and the Nexus One but also has plans for a rapid growth as a whole. The company aims to become the third-largest smartphone manufacturer in the world by 2012. To achieve this goal, HTC has to beat Apple which claims to presently hold this position. The lawsuit of Apple against HTC is clearly complicating HTC’s expansion, although Peter Chou says the company will defend against accusations of patent violation.

Significant success for HTC came after moving from Windows Mobile to Android. Out of the phones presented this year, HD Mini is the only one still using Windows Mobile, but no other handset will use a Microsoft operating system until the Windows Phone 7 will be available in the fall.
