Microsoft has confirmed its plans to add USB drive support for the Xbox 360 by means of a firmware update. The upgrade is due for the 6th of April and will allow users format any 1GB or even larger USB flash drive, up to 16GB, and make it store content that otherwise would require built-in storage or the already expired Xbox memory cards. Space can be set aside for a Windows or Mac PC.

Two drives can be attached simultaneously, which can bring a total of 32GB of storage. Thumb-sized flash drives are usually slower than SSDs, but they should be significantly faster than a built-in hard drive when loading games and other large amounts of content, according to Larry Hryb from Microsoft.

SanDisk will release a pre-formatted drive in May, in addition to the firmware upgrade. It will allow skipping the initial setup that is needed for generic drives.
