A number of manufacturers, such as CyberPower, Hewlett Packard, Maingear and Velocity will use in their high-end desktop PCs the recently unveiled Core i7-980X six-core processor. The new chip works at 3.33GHz in its standard form and uses Hyperthreading to allow 12 tasks to work simultaneously. Some computer makers have even assumed the responsibility to overclock Intel’s most capable consumer processor.
Hewlett Packard has begun to offer the HPE-180t equipped with the newest Core i7 chip from Intel, with base prices of $1,909. This new model includes 8GB of RAM, a 750GB hard drive or a 1TB version, as well as a 1GB ATI Radeon HD 4650 video card. Memory can go up to 24GB of RAM, storage can have two 1TB hard drives or a 300GB, with 10,000RPM unit that comes together with a 640GB hard drive. An optional NVIDIA’s 1.8GB GeForce GTX 260 video card is also possible. At the end of this month, the company will offer the new HPE-190t based on the Core i7-980X and equipped with a Blu-ray drive and a hard drive with a 1.5TB capacity, which will cost $1,900.
MainGear will issue the SHIFT X58 PCs based on the same processor, their prices beginning at $3,290. For that price, customers will get an ASUS main board with a SATA 6GBps interface, 6GB of RAM and a 750GB hard drive, a 1GB ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card, and USB 3.0 support. The SHIFT X58 is the only PC of all those mentioned here to have as an option a dual-port USB 3.0 hub.
Velocity Micro will release the Edge Z55, also powered by the new Core i7, with a price starting at $2,824. What buyers get for this money, along with the new chip, is 6GB of RAM, a 1.5TB at 7,200RPM Seagate hard drive and also a 512MB NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 graphics card. The company will also soon sell the Raptor Lx665 and Lx775 with the Core i7-980X for $3,599 and $4,799, respectively. However, no specifications on these systems were given.
CyberPower has introduced three new gaming computers based on the new processor, which include the Black Pearl, Gamer Xtreme 3D, and Fang Series Black Mamba.
The Black Pearl will have 12GB of DDR3 RAM, two video cards 1GB ATI Radeon HD 5870, a Blu-ray drive and also 7.1-channel surround sound. Storage comes with a 1TB, 7,200RPM hard drive and two Western Digital units with 300GB capacity. Prices start at $3,775.
The Gamer Xtreme 3D 3000 has only 6GB of DDR3 RAM, but sports two NVIDIA GTX 295 video cards with 1.7GB of RAM each and also a 1.5TB, 7,200RPM hard drive. It comes with a 22-inch Samsung monitor along with NVIDIA’s 3D Vision glasses. This configuration is priced starting at $3,945.
The fastest system of all three is the Fang Series Black Mamba, which ships with an Ultimate Overclock bumping up the Core i7′s speed to about 4.33GHz. It has an impressive 12GB of RAM, a liquid cooling kit for the processing unit and a liquid cooled video card ATI HD 5870 with 1GB of RAM. As for storage, two 64GB Kingston SSD drives make a fine pair with a 2TB, 7,200RPM hard drive. The Fang Series layout costs $4,255.
All three models can optionally have the Venom Boost technology of CyberPower including a liquid cooling kit and allowing the Core i7 to be overclocked by 30 percent.
