The PlayStation 3 of Sony is believed to sell more devices than any other competitor during the lifetime of the current product generation, says a report released by Strategy Analytics. Analysts have made predictions regarding overall shipments during the lifetime of the product instead of comparing sales figures immediately after the products are launched.

The current situation shows Nintendo’s Wii to hold the lead. PS3 and Xbox 360 are believed to continue to become stronger, analysts forecasting Sony’s console as becoming the largest platform by 2013. Recent reports present PS3 sales eventually hitting 127 million devices and Wii reaching sales of 103 million units.

Inherent uncertainty is shown by Strategy Analytics when it comes to predicting sales rates for years ahead. Microsoft’s Xbox could sell beyond expectations thanks to Project Natal. At the same time, the motion-based controller of Sony and the planned 3D upgrades may push the PS3 ahead of predicted figures.

The holiday shopping season in December has shown record sales numbers for both Wii and PS3 consoles, with 1.31 million and 3.8 million units, respectively. Overall sales for all brands, however, were down six percent from the previous year, despite the successful winter season. The descending trend is believed to continue this year, SA predicting a further nine percent decline.

Looking at the Wii’s software lineup this year, it’s hard to see them slipping to second or third in 2010.

Sorry Sony, but the hype machine just isn’t working. Keep focusing on your software because this year you’re going to need it! That’s all that matters. Forget about 2013. If you don’t make more headway now, 2013 isn’t going to matter!

It’s your own fault that you gave Microsoft a foot in the door. Now you’ve got three formidable opponents and don’t assume that they will relinquish their position so easily. BTW, you’re dead last in North America by at least 9 million units and the gap widens every day!

The third opponent being yourself ;)

So called experts, we already knews this. The PS3 from it’s inception had been setup to deal with 10yr lifespan. That’s why we buy them. Wii owners went for the fad, and are now looking to expand their gaming, and the natural choice is the PS3, as it does all the stuff Wii does, better and a whole lot more…

The reality is, the PS3 is currently only a few $/£ more than a Wii now, and you get Blu-Ray, HD, proper games, media, movie stores and a whole lot more for your money.

Other than bragging rights, it won’t matter who wins. All three companies have enough devoted fans that makes this article meaningless. It’s something to read when you’re bored…I did, but other than that, it doesn’t matter who “wins”. When this generation of consoles is over, each company will be doing fine.
