According to a job listing for the e-reader division, Lab126, Amazon seems to want a more important role for web browser on the Kindle. There is specifically tasked a Software Development Engineer, in order to improve Kindle’s basic browser with some new features. There are still no hints on the new features, but the new engineer will be part of a dedicated web browser team. This is a sign that Amazon wants a more seriously developed software.

The recent recruitment is the last in a series of signs that the company wants to expand Kindle’s feature set. Even if this is cheaper than other devices like the iPad, it cannot compare in what display and usefulness besides books is concerned. Last month, Amazon has released a rudimentary beta application platform and also wants to add LCDs and Wi-Fi. It also seems that the company has recently purchased multi-touch technology, through an acquisition of Touchco.

Amazon’s representatives have not yet mentioned anything on this posting’s significance; moreover, the company usually doesn’t discuss about its jobs outside of the listings.
