ARM’s global mobile device ODM manager recently said the number of touchscreen tablets using ARM chips would really explode in 2010. Roy Chen anticipates more than 50 shipping during the whole year, the first of them scheduled in the spring and meant for cellular carriers. A lot more would be delivered in the summer, according to Chen. Some of them are destined to the top 10 cellular carriers from over the world, many of them local to Chinese-speaking areas and will run either Windows CE or Android. ARM’s manager showed known Armadillo and Compal prototypes Android-based. A number of companies will perhaps bring tablets to the United States, like ICD and Notion Ink, while Dell’s Mini 5 straddles the border between these tablet devices and media players.

Many analysts believe Apple will get an important share of the market and will probably ship about five million iPads during the next few months. This way, it becomes the most popular touch-only tablet. Most of the early sales will be limited to Europe and North America and will not directly compete with most rivals from South-East Asia.

According to analysts, the launches will seriously affect Intel, which tried to impose the Atom processor as a possible solution for tablet devices and mobile Internet devices (MIDs), but its success was rather limited. Apart from the inclusion of the processor in the Hewlett Packard range, it proved to show very little attraction for other companies, as the chip has not had an acceptably long battery life until recently.
