The start of a new phone line, a quite rare event for Nokia, was recently marked by the launch of the C5, the first phone in the Cseries. The new range is meant to bring smartphone-level software to a very entry level and is powered by Symbian S60, everything in a candybar shape. Although the phone has only a number pad and a D-pad for navigation, full messaging and web browsing are present, as well as the custom home screen of Nokia with a real carousel of contacts, new e-mail and upcoming calendar items. The operating system streamlines MySpace and Facebook and leaves the door open to Ovi Store applications.

As for the inside, the phone has features of more expensive devices, with 3G included and GPS assisted as well. A 3.2-megapixel camera and a microSDHC slot complete these features. A quite new and interesting element is the 2GB microSD card included that offers the C5 a place to store the new and free version of Ovi Maps, which provides both urn-by-turn and walking directions.

Shipping for the C5 is expected in the spring at a price of just 135 euros or $183, before including an eventual carrier discount. The proposed version offers only 2G in North America, although Nokia usually provides North America Models with native 3G, which appear sometime after basic models are released internationally.
