Google has officially announced the acquisition of Picnik, which is a web-based picture editing website. The two companies have not revealed any of their deal’s terms, nor their short-term plans. Despite this, Google has mentioned that this deal will help the company improve the online photo editing feature. Picnik is expected to keep its service characteristics for the near future.
It is very possible that this deal will help upgrade Picasa. Moreover, it will offer Google the possibility to influence the web photo tools. Google will also be given an edge over Adobe Photoshop.com; Adobe’s service is currently offering a smaller variety of edits. The company will benefit from a big edge over Flickr, too. The Yahoo-owned website has been directing users to Picnik; despite this, it has never had an in-built editing.
The new acquisition may be related to Google’s long-term plans in what Chrome OS is concerned. Chrome’s dependence on web applications could depend on Google benefiting from its own web-designed tools; this would prevent Google from the extra cost of a licensing deal with another external partner. On the other hand, Android is less dependent, having its own port of Photoshop.com.
