The week began for HP with the launch of new EliteBook and ProBook models that include the first tablet based on the new chip architecture of Intel.
The EliteBook 2740p has a 12-inch multi-touch display that supports pens and a most durable constitution than mainstream computers like the TouchSmart tm2, for example. Resistance to humidity, dust and vibration is conforming to the US military’s 810G specifications thanks to a combination of stainless steel and magnesium outside.
The system is very fast and relies on a standard-voltage Core i5 or i7 capable of running for up to five hours using a single battery. A standard configuration was not announced by Hewlett Packard, but it could start at $1,599 with a disk space between 160GB and 250GB and up to 8GB of RAM. There is also an option for an SSD between 80GB and 160GB, a Qualcomm Gobi modem 3G-capable as well as a new Ultra-Slim Docking Base costing $299, which includes a DVD burner, DisplayPort out and eSATA.
A second model of EliteBook, the 2540p, has a conventional 12-inch display and is considered the lightest in the series with its under 3.4 pounds. It should be faster thanks to using the full-power Core i5 and i7 together with the low-voltage i7. In the absence of tablet hardware the option of a desktop hard drive allows between 250GB and 500GB of space, as well as a significantly longer battery life running up to 8.5 hours on a standard six-cell battery or 12.5 hours when using an extended nine-cell one. In the case of low-voltage i7 there is a secondary drive bay capable of taking a DVD burner or a second drive of 250GB. Another option is to leave the space empty to reduce the weight. A base system could start at a price of $1,099.
The ProBook models are more conservative but feature 13.3-inch 4320, 14-inch 4420, 15-inch 4520 or 17.3-inch 4720 with the full-power Core i3, i5 or i7 CPUs and an optional Mobility Radeon HD 4350 graphics and hard drive space between 250GB and 500GB. The whole line should start at a price of $719.
Availability for the EliteBook and the companion dock is scheduled for April, while the ProBook models should be ready later this month.
