Intel has recently announced the imminent launch of the second-generation Learning Series Classmate PC designed for young children. The new computer will sport a 10.1-inch LCD screen with a resolution of 1,024×600 instead of the 8.9-inch screen of the original computer. A low-power Intel Atom processor is used, although few details are provided. Wi-Fi is built in and a GPS sensor is optional, as well as 3G and WiMAX connectivity. The computer also has a swivelling camera and run time is improved thanks to the optional six-cell battery which allows up to 8.5 hours of life.

There is also a new e-reader application included in order to allow e-book reading in pdf and ePub format using a touchscreen interface. An annotation application is used for taking notes. Recording notes is eased by handwriting recognition software.

Features of the old model are still present, such as a water resistant keyboard, a rugged construction and a hard drive resistant to damages produced by shocks and drops. There is also an option for an antimicrobial keyboard.

Neither a shipping date nor a price for the second-generation Learning Series Classmate netbook was announced.
