As a source from within the graphics field says, NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 470 and 480 would only be available in short supply and would have very high prices. A launch was promised on March 26th at PAX East, but it seems that boards based on the new architecture would not sell any ATI-branded graphics and would only be available through NVIDIA’s most loyal companies. It is believed that other “second-tier” third parties selling both brands would have to wait at least until April to get the new products.
According to DigiTimes, PNY and XFX, two well-known brands, are believed to already take pre-orders for the cards and NVIDIA might price its them well above what AMD is offering. The GTX 470 may cost $500, while the flagship GTX 480 would be priced at $680, well above the maximum of $599 AMD charges for its dual chip Radeon HD 5970.
In the near future, pricing and release schedule will guide technology on its way into mainstream hardware. However, there is no reason for AMD to engage in a price war, as its current line-up would not compete directly with the faster GeForce technology. NVIDIA has championed the Fermi architecture, considered to be much more powerful for general-purpose tasks like CUDA and OpenGL, but it has also produced multiple delays due to its very complex design. AMD instead has successfully shipped its simpler and fast ATI Radeon HD 5800 series several months in advance.
This is wrong, There is no preorders set out yet and i quote from Nvidia.
“NVIDIA and our launch partners have not released pricing or pre-order information yet. Any Web sites claiming to be taking pre-orders should not be considered legitimate.” – NVIDIA PR
I am more interested in the benchmarks and the mid-range cards in the 4xx series. I wonder what the power requirements and performance of the 480 is going to be like, compared to 5970.
This article claims that the Radeon HD 5970 costs a maximum of $599. This is not correct. Currently, the price on Newegg is $699.99 for all four different models/vendors.
