Adobe’s announcement of no longer developing Flash 10.1 for Windows Mobile 6.5 has certainly hastened the awaited end of Windows Mobile. An Adobe representative claimed the company had to make a tough decision to abandon its plans regarding this platform as it would probably not support certain standards needed by the company. Adobe would instead concentrate on using the new Windows Phone 7 platform. He also mentioned that the HTC HD2, currently running on Windows Mobile 6.5, would be the first Windows-based phone to support Flash, which means this device will certainly get Windows Phone 7. HTC has already announced that its HD2 model would be the only one of the current range to support the next-generation operating system due to requirements involving its processor and screen characteristics.
Microsoft has already admitted to downplay the Windows Mobile 6.5 by naming it Windows Phone Classic, but never said it did not have the technology to successfully implement Flash. Adobe’s assertions are quite unusual when coming after months of its self commitment to Flash and make the current operating system obsolete before replacing it.
As it is already official, Android and webOS should be the first smartphone platforms to run Flash, but Adobe has clearly stated that the web plugin would require advanced hardware and yet unreleased software to run. As a consequence, Android may need 2.2 firmware, while Palm would need webOS 1.4. Initial limitations would include only very recent phones like the Motorola Droid and Google Nexus One. Apple seems to have deliberately avoided Flash on its devices as it has a major concern regarding performance and stability.
Everyone is bailing out of Windows Mobile, like rats deserting a sinking ship.
First Skype. Then Adobe Flash. Mozilla. The list goes on and on. Microsoft’s current phone platform is collapsing. It had better get its new platform out very quickly.
I want to by a pda based phone that I can use to create/view/modify word/excel documents. How does this change affect me?
The HTC HD2 has a lot to offer. It has loads of free applications including skype, opera browser and more in the marketplace. That being said the HTC HD2 still need a standalone flash for any online videos and endless amount of online flash base games.
