Nokia’s Ovi Maps may be available on other platforms as well

According to Greig Williams, Nokia’s southeast Europe GM, the new Ovi Maps service could be available for other platforms too; the declaration has been made in an interview in Austria’s Die Presse. Even if he didn’t mention a particular platform, he affirmed that expanding the service outside of Symbian is the next step in the company’s development. The interviewer mentioned Android and Windows Mobile as possibilities, but Williams has not confirmed any of these.

If the strategy proves to be true, it will surely be a major turnaround for the company. Even if Nokia has been writing sync software for Macs and Windows PCs, it has always used, for its won phones, Symbian, also keeping Ovi exclusive to the currently open-source mobile operating system. A change could draw attention to Ovi, as well as it could be a sign of the company no longer limiting to only one platform.

Now that Symbian^3 adds multi-touch and some other modern features, the pressure of using an alternative platform is smaller. Unfortunately, Nokia has been loosing smartphone market share lately because of the increasing dissatisfaction in what Symbian is concerned.

Nokia hasn’t confirmed any rumors yet, but it seems unlikely to port the Ovi Maps to the iPhone, because of the ongoing ITC complaints and lawsuits between the company and Apple.

It’s a shame Nokia don’t make it available for ALL of it’s models before they start making it available for other platforms. I think the word I’m looking for is “loyalty”
