On February 25, 2010, Virgin Media has officially announced that it will soon begin offering 100Mbps broadband service to the British market, somewhere before the end of this year. According to Virgin, this speed is possible thanks to the fiber optic network, used at the same time with DOCSIS 3.0 cable access. Coventry will also be added to the test of the company’s 200Mbps service ongoing in Kent at the moment. Virgin Media currently has 10Mbps, 20Mbps and 50Mbps service for its broadband clients; most of them are cable Internet subscribers.
A subscriber, who would switch to the 100Mbps service, could seemingly see the download time for a music album, for example, cut from 1 minute 15 seconds to less than 5 seconds. Virgin also claims that the download for a HD movie could be timed at about 8 minutes.
