The UK-based Broadband Computer Company is searching for a niche market of users for the easy-to-use Alex notebook. The 15.4-inch computer is meant for categories of users who are not at all interested in learning how to use a computer. Alex is Clevo M760T notebook rebranded. It has a 1.66GHz Celeron processor and 1GB of RAM. To log into the custom Linux-based operating system, the user has to insert a USB drive called latchkey and needs to type in a password. Each member of a family will have a latchkey for logging in and also accessing their own files.
Once they are logged in, the users can access the web, the e-mail, a media player, a photo viewer, a photo editor or an address book. Also provided are applications like word processing and spreadsheet that support Microsoft Office files.
BCC claims just one hour initial setup would be required and users would never again have to deal with performing updates or caring about installing antivirus programs. The 120GB hard drive is completed by a cloud storage service offered free of charge. Other features are a DVD burner, a 1.3-megapixel camera, connectivity through Wi-Fi and a six-cell battery.
The Alex notebook can be offered with or without an Internet service, although there is an associated monthly fee for either version. The prices start at the equivalent of about $620 in the United Kingdom, with monthly fees of $15 for the base models, while the monthly fee for the broadband-connected model is $40. If or when the Alex notebook will be offered in the United States is still doubtful as no indication has been given by now.
