The Portégé M780 tablet notebook presented earlier this year by Toshiba is now selling in the United States. Interesting details previously unknown are revealed by the product page, such as the fact that even if being dropped from up to three feet its hard drive does not suffer permanent damage. The 12.1-inch PC is equipped with a 2.13GHz Intel Core i3, 2.4GHz Core i5, or 2.66GHz Core i7 processor and can have from 2GB to 8GB of RAM.
The LED-backlit screen has a 1,280×800 resolution and can be watched even in bright outdoor conditions. The standard display supports input from a digital pen, although there is an optional overlay that allows finger touch support. Storage is represented by a 250GB hard drive with a 5,400RPM speed as a standard, or a 320GB, 7,200RPM drive and a 128GB solid state drive as options. The system comes with Windows 7 Professional preloaded along with a Windows XP Tablet PC Edition disc for those users wanting to avoid the old operating system.
Other features are common to all versions, such as integrated Wi-Fi, HD graphics by Intel, a fingerprint reader and USB Sleep-and-Charge ports made by Toshiba. A dual-layer DVD burner and a six-cell battery are also included in the specifications. There is optional Bluetooth 2.1 for the base and customizable version, but a standard feature on all other models, as is the 1.3-megapixel webcam.
Another notebook, the 13.1-inch Satellite Pro U500, has multi-touch capability will be available soon in the United States. The notebook ships with either a 2.2GHz or 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 2GB or 4GB of RAM. All versions use an Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics for the 1,280×800 resolution screen, and hard drives ranging from 250GB to 400GB. All models have DVD drives, webcams and connectivity provided through Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.
The Portégé M780 has prices starting from $1,399 up to $1,799 and users can also build their own models. The base model of the Satellite Pro U500 costs $949, while the top model is $1,099.
