At Mobile World Congress, the chief executive of Samsung, Choi Jee-sung, said that that the investment for mobile phone software will most probably exceed last year’s $113 million. Samsung, which is the second largest mobile phone maker in the world, is planning a revised marketing strategy, in order to gain market share in the smartphone segment; this new strategy focuses on content, applications, as well as on services. The company’s application store is expected to reach to 50 countries through 2010. A software development kit has also been launched for Samsung’s quasi-open source Bada OS.

The Samsung Bada platform offers multi-touch support and also includes, as an interface, the company’s custom TouchWiz 3.0. TouchWiz has a combined inbox which is able to manage contacts from phone, email and updates from social media websites; the custom interface is designed for easy handling widgets.

Samsung’s first Bada phone, the Wave, has been released recently. The company intends to triple last year’s number of shipped smartphones. The phone development for other mobile operating systems will continue (for example, Android, Symbian and Windows Mobile). Samsung is also a member of the Wholesale Applications Community, which gathers various phone makers and networks, such as the rivals Sony Ericsson and LG.
