Microsoft has announced that its browser ballot will be launched this week in European versions of Windows. This launch is scheduled for the 1st of March and will be a limited one. The ballot will allow Windows users to choose one of the five most popular web browsers they prefer and want have installed as a default. They will be presented in a random order and other less popular browsers will be available as well. The initial set of choices includes Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and also Apple Safari, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Opera. Variants of them, such as the Maxthon browser, based on IE, will be available too.

The need for this ballot has appeared as a result of competition law problems with Internet Explorer as a default browser in Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7, with users not having any other option. When the Windows Update is launched, users will be able to install browsers belonging to competing software companies. The initial test is scheduled for the next days and will be addressed to users in Belgium, France and United Kingdom.

Running this update in Windows 7 has also the effect of removing automatically Internet Explorer from the taskbar if already set.
